Congregation Sherith Israel Newsletter

Sherith Israel Newsletter

Sherith Israel is a quarterly newsletter done in a duotone that changes with every issue. I layout the content and ensure that all photography/imagery used is kept at the high level of quality that is expected with it. Although to some this may be considered mundane, I enjoy working within these constraints as they are a chance to see what can be done within a standardized format.

San Francisco Multimedia Studies Program

An assignment from typography class, we had to choose a musician from a list of 3 to do a promotional poster for a concert they were going to have using 11×17 normal inkjet paper, black and white only, no images/illustrations except the given stock photography to choose from and the type. I really liked this project as I was working with some very big limits that made me have to really think about how to layout the poster and what type to use for it.

Mike Doyle
Client

Mike wanted to have a logo to represent himself as a professional in media production, while also giving hint to his relaxed and friendly manner. When I say media production, I mean every single part of the production pipeline for film. He writes, he directs, he shoots, he produces, he scores, he does post production using After Effects and other tools. Hell, he might even be an actor too if you asked him. He’s covered all the bases, and is expanding to rich web media using Flash. No matter what it is you’ve got, even if it’s just an idea, he can bring that idea to fruition.

Radiance
Personal/Branding Exercise

Typography is one of my favorite aspects of graphic design because even the subtlest difference in type can change the mood of something significantly. I wanted to make a logotype for a company that made hair products and marketed to folks who wanted to bring out their personal beauty. It could not be a very fancy looking design, it had to be more humane, a mixture of the soft and the sharp. It had to be something that wouldn’t be embarrassing to buy, it would be about natural beauty. I took an existing sharp font and proceeded to smooth the edges around, change the top of the i to a much softer shape that doubled with its resemblance to a sunrise. The type was made thick but not tight, smooth but not squishy, strong but not forceful. It could stand on it’s own.

Congregation Beth Am Newsletter
SJWeeks Designs Firm

Congregation Beth Am has a monthly newsletter that always has a motherload of content. This is a great exercise in working with limitations without losing quality. Choosing what’s really important for each issue and how everything flows. Beth Am and Sherith Israel use different printers where one is brighter and the other is darker. I have always maintained the correct level of black to ensure proper printing for both.

Diablo Light Opera Company: Will Roger’s Follies Promotion
SJWeeks Designs Firm

DLOC has had a lot of promotional material for their performances, but this was my favorite. I got to work with stock imagery of the actors themselves, make decisions on fitting the content and ensuring that the quality of the imagery was great down the line.
